Discipline Policy


Discipline:  A Shared Responsibility:  In order to maximize student achievement and academic performance, students must follow school wide and classroom rules. Discipline is a process of growth by which an individual acquires self-direction and self-control.  The disciplined person assumes responsibility for his/her own action in accordance with socially accepted behavior.  An effective discipline program must have the cooperation and support of all persons involved.

Positive Reinforcement:  The key to maintaining an effective discipline program is the use of positive reinforcement activities.  It is the school’s policy to inform parents about the positive progress students are making in school through regular citizenship awards, notes home, award assemblies, and special activities.

Referral Procedures:  The referral policy for unacceptable behavior in class, on the yard, or to and from school is as follows:  (Each step represents a systematic process designed to alleviate unacceptable behavior.

NOTE:  Behavior which threatens the safety of any individual is subject to immediate suspension.

  • Step 1:Teacher counsels student and documents appropriate interventions
  • Step 2:Teacher informs parent by phone or letter and records information into a log.
  • Step 3:Parent-Teacher conference is scheduled.
  • Step 4:Administrator counsels student and appropriate interventions are taken.
  • Step 5:Administrator informs parent by phone or letter.
  • Step 6:Parent conference is scheduled and appropriate interventions are taken.
  • Step 7:Student is suspended and parents are notified in writing.

At each step in the referral process, interventions/consequences, appropriate to the offense, will be implemented which will alleviate specific inappropriate behavior.  For example:  If a student deliberately disrupts the classroom environment, he/she will be isolated from that classroom by placing him/her under the supervision of another teacher in a different classroom.  He/she will receive a failing grade for that subject that day and must make up the work missed that day.

Unacceptable Behavior:  (May result in immediate suspension or expulsion).

  • Assault – verbal or physical threat or action against another person.
  • Weapons – possession of any item or dangerous object which could cause injury to any person (which includes fireworks).
  • Smoking, drugs or alcohol – use or possession
  • Vandalism – destruction or attempted destruction of school or private property.
  • Vulgarity or profanity
  • Deliberate classroom disruption
  • Defiance of authority
  • Theft or extortion
  • Sexual Harassment

Prohibited Items:

  • Telephones, Radios, Nintendo, or other electronic games
  • Playing cards, dice, baseball or pokemon cards
  • Dark glasses
  • Any gang identification paraphernalia or dress
  • Cigarette lighters or matches
  • Toys (cap pistols, marbles, etc.)
  • Hats, big earrings, no hoop earrings only studs
  • Bicycles, skates, skateboards, scooters

Please leave all electronic equipment at home.  Cell phones, IPods, CD players, etc…interfere with the academic program and are not allowed at school.  When they disrupt the academic program, they will be confiscated.

First Offense: Parent retrieves the item.

Second Offense:  Items will be returned at the end of the school year. 

The school will not be responsible for any item brought to school, which was confiscated, lost or damaged.


Compton Unified School District has adopted a MANDATORY DRESS CODE. Bunche Middle School’s uniforms must be worn daily. 

At Bunche, we take pride in running a safe, efficient and effective school by setting high standards for student behavior.  We must insist that the students follow classroom and school rules.  Each teacher will send home his/her assertive discipline plan which outlines the rules of expected appropriate behavior, consequences and rewards.  No student will be allowed to interrupt the learning of other students, nor interrupt a teacher’s instruction.  Students are given orientation on the school and classroom rules at the beginning of the school year and review is given periodically.  Parents may contact the school administrator if they have concerns or questions regarding this information.
